Health is the most critical component of rural development. Hundreds of thousands of rural women, children and elderly persons suffer due to absence of adequate health benefit programmes. Their
hard-earned incomes are spent on expensive medical care. SSP entered the fray in 2006, with an intent to ensure easy access to healthcare through tie-ups with medical institutions.
Thus was SAST - Sakhi Arogya Samudaya Trust - born. Today, families contribute a premium amount each year and the women managed health fund, provides health referral services and guidance through Arogya
Sakhis "health friends". Till date, 25,000 people have enrolled in the health insurance program and have received over Rs. 5 million in claims for hospital coverage and saved about Rs. 17,00,000 on health expenditure.
